Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) is a public federal university that is located in Bauchi, Bauchi state. The university was named in honor of Nigeria’s first prime minister, Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University was established in 1980 by the federal government as a university of technology; it began to offer degree and pre-degree courses until 1984, when the university was merged with Ahmadu Bello University, making the university lose its autonomous status and thus becoming a university college.
It operated under Ahmadu Bello University as a campus branch until 1988, when the institution was demerged from Ahmadu Bello University and was therefore granted its autonomous status to offer degree certificates in the institution without approval from other universities.
ATBU operates from its two campuses, with the main campus located in Yelwa and the other located in Gubi. ATBU operates on a faculty-based system structure in the institution, moving from its school-based structure it used before gaining autonomous status.
ATBU is dedicated to its vision to become a center of excellence for the creation, transfer, and application of scientific knowledge for the advancement of mankind in a friendly, interactive, and multicultural environment.
